Storyboard Animatic

Here is our animatic. I think it's clear that we're going to have to try and get a few more shots into the  video when it comes to shooting it, we're currently discussing what else could be added into the video still keeping the idea of the day trip/tour on board.

We have cut the song from its original 3 minutes 55 seconds as it just seemed to long, and the album version has a somewhat unnecessary end for the music video itself, which is obviously an thought that was shared with Bombay Bicycle Club themselves as they actually cut the track by around 20 seconds for their video.

In this animatic we've used 53 shots whereas Bombay Bicycle Club themselves used around 15 more than this, however their version of the song is 12 seconds longer than ours. We still believe that the video would benefit from some faster shots though, so we will be looking to put them in and upload a few picture ideas for them also.

Risk Assessment

When producing a music video is it essential to produce a risk assessment, this enables us to keep everyone safe and be aware of any risks around. As our video is very disjunctive and is filmed in a number of different locations is it imperative that we produce a risk assessment. As our music will be filmed in many public locations most of the risk has been taken care of and it is our responsibility to follow the rules and regulations that have already been made clear to us. However for other locations such as the cut back to the band the location will be much more private and it is up to us to identify the risk and make others aware.

I will start the risk assessment with the most likely risks, such as tripping hazards. There is always the hazard of tripping wherever we film, however the most likely is to be tripping over wires and equipment when filming the actual band performance. Although tripping is a hazard the consequences of such a hazard are usually fairly minor, although we will still look to avoid this hazard by making everyone aware of the wires and equipment. When filming in public locations such as the Bullring there is very little we can do about such hazards.

Another hazard that must be considered when producing our video is the danger of vehicles, this is particularly   concerning the train we are planning to include in our video. Despite the obvious risk of such vehicles the likelihood of an accident is relatively low, although any accident could be extremely severe. We plan to avoid this by following any rules and regulations that have been displayed through signs and announcements.

Obviously when filming in public there is also the threat from other people, this again is very unlikely to happen  and we will avoid this hazard by sticking together as a group.

An obvious and much more likely hazard is caused by the equipment used during the bands performance and the filming equipment used. This is much more likely to happen although the consequences should be less severe than some of the other hazard we face during the filming of our music video. To prevent this hazard causing any problem no matter how severe, we will ensure that all equipment is securely placed (for example speaker and amps). Other equipment such as light and camera's also represent the risk of burns.

Overall there are always going to be hazards no matter where or how we film our music video, the likelihood and severity of these vary greatly. We will be doing everything we can to avoid any hazard during the making of our video and producing this risk assessment will only heighten our awareness of the risks around.

Filming Locations

After producing an overall idea for our music video, we have been told that we need to into more detail about the locations we are planning on filming in. Our chosen song Shuffle - Bombay Bicycle Club has in my opinion a brilliant video, in which the band are just filmed behind the scenes to give the audience an idea of what their life is like.

For our idea we were planning on creating something similar to this, our idea was to film our band members on a day out with cut back to the band performing in a studio. We were going to film the band on a day out in Birmingham, we have chosen Birmingham because it is one the biggest cities in England and boasts multiple attractions such as the Bullring, The Mailbox and Skate Parks (we do have a particular one in mind, however I do not know the name of it). We are also planning to do some filming in the nightlife of Birmingham and Leicester, we decided to include this in our video as we both believe that nightlife and and partying is a massive part of band life, so to give the audience a realistic insight into the bands life this must be included.

As for the location we are going to use for filming the band performing, we are undecided, this is due to us struggling to find a location big enough to use and a location were nobody would be disturbed.

We plan to start our filming at the train station as we have some good idea's in which this would be the perfect location to make these ideas a reality. After filming the train station and the journey (we will film both the journey there and the journey back), we will head towards the Bullring shopping centre, this is our second filming location and we plan to use the statue of the bull outside the shopping centre as well as using the escalators inside the shopping centre as we will believe this will look effective. We may film inside some of the shops in the shopping centre but exactley which shops is still in discussion.

Our next filming location will be the skatepark, we decided to film here as skating is a big part of the representation of the indie/alternative genre. Another reason for filming here is that some of the members of the band are enthusiastic skaters and to film them skating would add another aspect to the music video.

We also plan to film inside some of the nightlife in Leicester and in Birmingham as night life and nightime activities all come as part of being in a band. We plan to film some footage for the music Video in Mosh Night Club in Leicester, as we believe this willl again look good in a music video and will be particularly coherent with our choice of song.

Our Overall Idea

Today we have a post that is summing up our thoughts on the video so far, so here goes.

We now believe that we will have 4 band members, a drummer, a keyboard player, [Dan Morrow] a bass player and a singer/lead guitarist. The other band members are as yet still undecided. The band will all be male, and for further information on the band please follow this link.  The style of the band will be having is the alternative/indie style and all band members will be wearing similarly styled clothes.

The song that we will be doing is going to be Bombay Bicycle Club - Shuffle. We believe that this song gives us lots of opportunities to do whatever we want really in terms of what we include in the video. Our video will come under the category of disjuncture, the video won't really resemble much of the lyrics of the song, however sometimes we will aim to show the lyrics but in different ways. This gives us the freedom of being able to make a video that will be fun, fast, slightly random at times, quirky and hopefully we will be able to get some moving images to give it the 'arty' effect.

We will be aiming to appeal people looking for an indie/alternative music genre and who fall within the 16-25 age range both male and female. Our band are called LA Unknown, this also explained in further detail in this post

In terms of location, we intend to have lots of different locations, both inside and outside. The thinking behind this is that it keeps all options open to us. The performance will most likely be inside, with the more random and fun aspects being filmed outside.  We like the idea of the band performing the track live, so we will probably have a set venue for that which we can go back too throughout the video.  We very much doubt that we will be able to actually shoot it all within the same day, as there are locations such as train stations that we plan to visit after or before we shoot the video.  The plan is to either drive, or get the train to somewhere such as Birmingham to give us the opportunity to shoot in lots of different and unsual places.

Endings

We've been trying to think of a way of ending the video, as it's apparent by watching many other music videos in the genre we want to do that there are in fact lots of various ways to bring the video to a end, and it's all about finding the right way for our video.

I've looked at many, ranging from people walking over to the camera at the end of a film, which my friend Jack Tranter used in his A2 music video shown below:

I think this works really well, as it gives the total blackout effect that's required and you can also see that the video is coming to a clear end with the music fading out and then Joe walking over with his hand out and the finally putting his hand over the camera.

I also have already looked at the video by The Vaccines - If you Wanna. They end the video with the lighting slowly turning off, and then leaving the band members in silhouettes, which i believe looks really good, here's a quick clip of the ending:

With the Foals video for the single Spanish Sahara you'll watch below, they use an image of rippling waves as a way of showing that the video is coming to an end, and the eventual end comes about by a dissolving effect that is used which in my opinion does look good, however I feel there are other ways of ending a video that are more effective.

I have seen a video, which the name escapes me, that finished with a fish eye effect, with the circle becoming smaller and smaller until the circle was no more, and the whole screen went totally black. After consulting Ed about what he wants he seems to agree that the idea is a good one and that we will more than likely try and bring our video to and end in this way.

Finally, just to add to the artwork's Ed uploaded earlier, I also have a few more to add that I like and feel we could try and take some ideas out of...

Examples of Other Texts

I have been looking for images which I like and which can offer me some inspiration. These images are unique and stylish. I have selcted a wide range of images some of which are far too complicated and advanced for us to recreate and some in contrast are very simple but effective. Some if the artists are not from the genre we are focusing on but can still offer some inspiration and provide ideas.

This album cover by The Streets for the album Computer and Blues is partically interesting, although it is not particularly intricate it is a very good idea for an album cover. The simplicity of the idea for the album cover is brilliant, although producing something similar would extremely difficult to the the location needed for the photo. One of my favorite things about this album cover is the lighter in the top left corner with the bands name on it, this is something of a trademark for the band as they use this light on all of their album covers.

This album cover by the Klaxons is much busier and more complex than the one by The Streets, however I am still a fan of it. Although the album cover does not make much sense I believe it is eye catching and colourful, the way effects have been used to make it look like a collage is also effective. I believe we could create something quite abstract and colourful like this album cover if we put in the time and the effort, however I myself prefer the more simple album covers.

This album cover by Notorious B.I.G and the XX is one of my personal favourites, as it is quite simple but also eyecatching. The contents of the album cover also relate strongly to both artists as the X is a trademark symbol of the XX and obviously the face is of Biggie Smalls. I believe we could create something similar to this with out band name and I personally feel it could be very successful.

This album cover by Santogold is another example of a brilliant album cover, at first it appears to be very simple, but lots of editing has been used in the creation of this album cover. Looking closely you can see that the image has been mirrored at the bottom of the picture, a gold patch has also been edited into the picture which is fitting as it again relates to the artist. The picture has also been taken in black and white, this is extremely effective as it makes the gold standout.

This album cover by Radiohead is another example of a busier more colourful artwork, the use of colour is in fact very intelligent as the album is called rainbow which automatically suggests colour to many people. The way the band name and also the album name is repeated also adds a simply feel the to the album cover, and makes it very clear to the audience who's album they are looking at. Overall I am very fond of this album artwork, despite it being quite busy I beleive the reasoning behind the use of colour and the simplistic repetition make for a very successful album cover.

This album cover by the Arctic Monkeys for their most recent album Suck It and See is another one of my favourites. At a first glance some people may just this as plain and boring, but i believe that the simplicity of the cover is brilliant. The album name has simply been place against a plain background without any other information being given. Although some may say this album cover is too simple I am and always will be a fan.

Song Choice

We narrowed the possible songs down to a shortlist of just 10 tracks these were;

1. Friendly Fires - Hawaiian Air
2. Arctic Monkeys - Riot Van
3. MGMT - Kids Oracular
4. Klaxons - Golden Skans
5. Bombay Bicycle Club - Shuffle
6. The Maccabees - Lego
7. Two Door Cinema Club - Undercover Martyn
8. Ou Est Le Swimming Pool - Dance The Way I Feel
9. Mark Ronson - Stop Me
10. Bloc Party - Flux

It took us a lot of decision making and we finally came to the conclusion that we both believe the song that has the most potential for the type of video we are looking to produce would be Bombay Bicycle Club - Shuffle.

However, we wanted to make sure that other people thought that our ideas were good, and therefore presented our ideas to a number of people that are within our target audience. They all said that are ideas were good and that we would be able to pull it off.

Therefore our decision was made. We will be making a music video for Bombay Bicycle Club's - Shuffle.

Here is the video:

Market Research

Before creating our music video we decided to conduct some market research on the genre we are looking to use. The genre we have chosen is Indie/Alternative, we have chosen this genre as we both share a common interest in the gerne, and feel this genre will represent us in the best way possible.

The Indie/Alternative genre is extremely popular at this moment in time, with bands such as Bombay Bicycle Club, Friendly Fires, Two Door Cinema Club, The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys dominating the festival scene this year, the indie/alternative genre has been represented extremely well across all festivals and have attracted huge audiences.

It has also recently become clear that the inde/alternative genre has had a huge effect on the way people dress. People have began to copy the style of bands such as Bombay Bicycle Club and The Maccabees.

Looking at the Itunes download it is clear to see that the Indie/Alternative genre is again being well represented. When looking at the Itunes songs download chart Adele - Someone Like You is in first position with Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks in second. Other Artist such as Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Coldplay also occupying the top 50.

When looking at the album download the genre is strongly represented with Red Hot Chilli Pepper, Bon Iver, Foster The People and the Adele all coming inside the top 10.

Band Biography

My band will be aged 19-23 and will all be male. The band consist of just 4 members, a bass player, a drum player, a keyboard player and the lead guitarist also being the vocalist. They formed in mid 2009, after all meeting at their university in the outskirts of London. They began as most bands do, just at the very small venues, all local with free entrance. They then began to start to play slightly bigger venues, still fairly small, however they now were beginning to play at venues which required entrance fees. They began to be known within the music industry around the area for their tracks, with people describing them as 'bombay bicycle club, with a twist'.

As soon as they started to be more and more well known, they had a little interest with a record company. The company simply offered to just pay for there travel to various venues around the south of England, with people believing that they were just seeing if the boys from the outskirts of London could possibly be a hit outside of their own city. As it turned out, they were a big success nearly everywhere they went. They then were offered a record contract with Fiction Records. With people such as White Lies, Snow Patrol, The Maccabees, Filthy Dukes, Ian Brown and Crystal Castles already on this record contract they decided to absolutely jump at the chance and signed the deal just 2 weeks after they returned to London. Their dress sense is definately taking inspirations from people such as Yannis Philippakis, Orlando Weeks by following the 'indie/alternative' style of clothing.

They lead the lives of most young people, they enjoy going to partys with their friends, staying in around one of the other band member's house with a few cans. Whilst together they always like trying to write new music, & they also like listening to new music that they've heard. Their genre of music is 'indie/alternative' with the lead singer, having a distinct voice. They have now all left university with all the hype that surrounds them as a band, and are releasing their debut album in early October and going on tour as the support act for the band Arctic Monkeys.

Audience Profile

After thinking about who we want our music video to be aimed we came up with the following description;

My video would generally be aimed at people ranging from around 15 right through to the age of about 26, they will be both male and female. I think that this is a good catchment area and they will, at this age, they should have similar interests and music taste.
Our 'common' viewer would be, either male or female, fall within the age range of 15-26 and also be heavily into their music. They will all hopefully be looking for something different and querky in a music video, howevers still encorporating the common convetions and would like to see some links between the lyrics and storyline. Generally, the male side of the audience would be watching films that are Comedy, e.g. Shaun Of The Dead however they would obviously like action films for example James Bond, and films such as The Godfather. The female audience would be watching films such as Love Actually, Anchorman and also Step Brothers.  I would say that generally the male audience would be shopping at places such as urbanindustry, wellgosh and karmaloop, however on the other hand I would still include shops such as Zara and H&M. For the female audience I would say that they would shop at places such as Topshop, Zara & Urban Outfitters. I believe that they would be looking pretty similar to the people that I have shown above in terms of fashion sense. These are infact members of bands, Viva Brother & student at Hinckley Music college Jamie Hives.

Jamie is a 19 year old from Lutterworth, he currently attends Hinckley Music College, he takes great interest in not only his music but his style. Jamie is the ideal person to produce an audience profile on as he is clearly heavily into his music as he is currently a member of an up and coming band named 'Junior Fencing Club'. The band is of a similar genre of the band we are likely to produce a music video for, this is again ideal as it means that Jamie is heavily influenced by this genre of music, so much so that he has created his own band.  It also means that Jamies style is influence by this genre of music and it is this individual style that we are aiming out music video at. Due to Jamie's interests and music taste he would probably enjoy the video that we will produce. This year Jamie attended the festival benicassim which is a massive music festival in Spain, boasting such acts as The Streets, The Strokes, Artic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, Friendly Fires, Elbow, Primal Scream and Bombay Bicycle Club. Jamie has also attended other festivals such as Reading festival in 2009.

Twitter.

I've just set up a Twitter feed for our band; LA Unknown.

Turns out someone who never uses twitter has the account @LAUnknown, so we used @LAUnkwn instead which we both think looks pretty good anyway.

I've instantly gone and began to follow inspirational artists to the band in the same genre such as Mystery Jets, Two Door, The Vaccines etc.

Genre?

We always had a idea of what genre we wanted to make a music video on. This was always going to be alternative/indie.

We felt that between us, we enjoyed the same styles of music. There's no secret about the fact that our musical preference definitely has an influence on things such as the way we dress, interests and even to a certain extent who and how you are. Another reason is simply we wanted to make something that we would enjoy ourselves, we wanted to pick a song that we felt represented us well.

However, it was important for us to explore what's selling today in the music industry, we couldn't just say right this is what we're doing and that's that. Therefore we had a look and the different kinds of things that were selling well and doing well in terms of who's selling the most songs, albums and who's videos are being downloaded most.

It becomes very obvious when you look at things such as the Official UK Top 40, with pop absolutely taking up nearly every single Top 40 spot. However, when you look at things such as albums, you see a different pattern. The pattern in the album charts is that bands tend to rule the roost as it were in this side of UK sales, with people such as Bombay Bicycle Club entering at no. 6, with others top spots being occupied by bands such as The Vaccines, Noah & The Whale & Two Door Cinema Club.

If you look at the bands spoken about above they are generally exactly the kind of genre we are wanting to do, and therefore we came to the conclusion that we would do a alternative/indie music video as we think it would definitely be viewed plenty of times.

Mood Board

Using inpiration from other artist style and album artwork I have created this mood board, i chosen artists from a similar genre as our band as they should have a similar style to what we are looking to recreate.

Band Name

It's taken me and Ed a while to start and get some ideas for band names. We started thiking of a band name last week, and started by going through old editions of music magazines, both of our iTunes library to look for one word names to have as our name, this is because we felt that by doing this it would be short, sweet and to the point. We then decided we wanted to have my band as 'The' someone. We once again looked at music artist names for inspiration but didn't find anything that we both agreed on and liked.

We then started going through more songs in our iTunes and found the song titled LA Love by Fenech Soler. We both instantly agreed that we liked the way Fenech Soler had named the song starting with LA, which can either be taken as 'the' in French, or Los Angeles. We decided to take it as in the French way of saying 'the' and therefore decided to use this as a way of showing that the band are demonstrating that they have different ways of expressing themselves and didn't simply stick to the trend of just having 'The' in front of their chosen word for the band name.

After that we took a dictionary and looked through for words that would work well for a band of this genre type - 'Indie/Alternative'. After making several different names for the band, we finally decided to name the band 'LA Unknown'.

The reasoning behind the word Unknown is fairly simple. We feel that being called LA Unkown; 'The Unknown' it showed that before the band found their success they were actually no-where in the music industry, and were only really heard about in there hometown of Camden.

Make Some Noise - Beastie Boys Video Analysis

I have chosen to analyze this video despite the fact that it is not the genre of music we're planning on using because I  believe it is a very good music video and it created lots of hype when it was released. This particular music video uses big name actors such as Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen and Danny McBride starring as the members of the Beastie Boys, but there are also many others such Rashida Jones, Jason Schwartzman, Rainn Wilson, Steve Buscemi, Ted Danson, Chloe Sevigny, Kirsten Dunst, Maya Rudolph, Orlando Bloom, David Cross, Jack Black and John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell who make cameo appearences in the video. Obviously we do not have the ability to use famous actors, but the use of these actors really adds a lot to the video and goes some way to showing why it is such a successful music video.

Despite the use of several famous actors lots of thought has gone into the making of the video as it serves as a prequel to the Beastie Boys hugely memorable video for the song 'Fight For Your Right' which is featured at the very beginning of the video and marks the return of the Beastie Boys with their new album Hot Sauce Committee Part II.

Just like the ending the introduction of any music video is extremely important, the introduction in the video 'Make Some Noise' is particularly memorable as it reveals some of the context of the video by playing 'Fight For Your Right' in the background. No introduction is required for the characters as due to their big profiles they are instantly recognizable, even though they are dressed in 90's clothing to imitate the original members of the Beastie Boys. The intorduction to this video is much longer than most, as the song does not actually begin until the video is already 1.15 minutes into the video. The introduction of the video shows the characters leaving what appears to be a party. The trio then break into a store and steal some alcohol, as the characters smash the second piece of glass in the store it is in time with the beat of the music as the tempo changes, this is  a technique we could look to recreate in our music video perhaps when the music kicks in or at a time when the music changes.

After this scene the lyrics kick in and the characters in the video begin to mime the words. The video skips between a number of different camera shots, from close ups of the chracters miming as they walk the streets to longshots of them across the street. This variety of shots keeps the video interesting and also shows the professionalism of the camera work and editing. One shot which particularly caught my eye was the low pan shot when the character playing MCA just onto a car and sprays beer on passers bye. Also during that scene the video is slowed down to show the full effect of the spraying beer, altering the speed of the video to capture key moments could be another editing technique we look to use in our video.

The video for 'Make Some Noise' also contains an element of comedy, the scene where MCA is hit by a car after stealing a skateboard. The comedy lies in the unrealistic stunt work, where it is clearly a dummy of MCA which is hit by the car. MCA also escapes from this accident unharmed which also adds comedy.

Another big star emerges later in the music video in the form of Will Ferrell, playing the limo driver. The limo driver then starts to play the cow bell in time with the music, the appearance of the limo driver  and the simplistic nature of the instrument he plays again adds comedy to the video.

As the video continues there are some more examples of advanced camera work, Elijah Wood walks up to the camera and spins it round whilst holding in a close of his face. This is an interesting technique and is something we could look to use in our music video.

The ending of Make Some Noise is particularly interesting, the characters walk around the cornor and engage in a sort of stand off with an older generation of Beastie Boys consisting of Jack Black, Will Ferrell and John Reilly.

Magnet - Bombay Bicycle Club, Video Analysis

I have chosen the analyze this music video for the song 'Magnet' by Bombay Bicycle Club, i find this video quite fascinating and have also chosen it as it has inspired and may perhaps be possible to recreate in some way. The video begins with several different images and animations projected onto the walls surrounding the band. The flashing images are are in time the beat of the song which adds a hint of professionalism to the video.

As the singer begins the flashing projections continue however the lighting changes and a spotlight is placed on the lead singer. This emphasis's the lyrics and draws the viewers attention to the front man. However in between the singing the spot light is placed on the rest of the band, showing the unity of the band by drawing attention to each and everyone of them and what they bring. As the singing begins a picture of a woman is projected onto the background, judging from the lyrics 'which one will stay which one will say goodbye, just my luck to find, someone who makes me want to leave her behind'

The video then continues, and a mixture of different camera shots are used. A series of low camera angles are used showing in the bands feet and particularly the drummers feet and he plays his instrument. Although this is quite a simple technique it is effective and adds another aspect to the video. I believe this technique is something we could look to recreate in our music video.

As the chorus kicks in the animation surrounding the band shows a woman swimming, this doesn't really connect to the meaning of the song and is quite random and alternative. The use of spotlights is also used frequently during the chorus highlighting certain members of the band and drawing attention to them. The are parts of the video where the only lighting is a spot light above the lead man, this is definitely possible to recreate and in my view is a very good idea to use in a music video.

During the second half of the video there is much more variety in the of camera shots, there are several close up shots of the lead singer and also of the drummer. This is much more interesting as using the same camera shot throughout the video would become quite monotonous. The ending of any video is always a crucial part as it is the last thing you remember, the way Bombay Bicycle Club ended this video was quite disappointing and has also come under criticism from other Youtube users.

The Vaccines - If You Wanna

This video by The Vaccines is one of, if not the most simplistic video yet to come from the band. I have chosen to do an analysis of it as I believe that despite it being so simply done, it still looks good and looks like a professional video.

In this opening scene the lighting is crucial. As the song gets louder, and the guitars are strum, the lighting changes colour and also brightens up in time with the song - on-beat editing. The lighting is also done in correspondence to the word 'morning' as the light changes to a yellowy, orange colour, representing the sun rising.

The thing I like about this video, and this clip in particular is the way that the band are just doing what they do best, playing their music. It has close ups on the lead singer, singing the lyrics into the microphone, another close up on the guitarist playing a riff that can be strongly heard in the song and finally a close up of the drummer. All of this is in perfect time and it looks as if the band are actually performing the song live for the video. The main focus in the clip and in the video as a whole is the lead singer, as it often is, as it highlights the fact that he is infact the frontman of the band, however by having midshots and close ups of every band member gives emphasis on the fact that it isn't just about Justin Young, the frontman, and that infact they're a band and each member is crucial.

The lighting is used here to show the emotions of the lyrics. With the lyrics being 'alone, I am all alone' blue lighting is used, showing the viewer that he is upset about this, and on the final time of repeating the lyrics 'I am all alone' the blue gets darker and darker until it goes totally black and you can just see the band members in shadows which looks very effective. When the song then moves back onto 'If you wanna come back it's alright' the lighting then moves back into a bright orange, and the band members seem to now be playing the song with more anger behind them and it's clear to see from Justin's facial expression that he is now moved on from his bland facial expression used to show his sadness in the 'all alone' part of the song.

In this final part of the video there is a lot of movement from the band, with them jumping around a lot, this representative of the speed of the song. There is a lot of midshots and close ups on the different members all playing their different instruments. The lighting changes a lot in the final part of the video, this once again showing the speed of the final part of the song.

To end the video they simply have the screen getting dark from top working down to the bottom, but just before it all goes black you can make out the silhouettes of the band members just before it goes totally off, signaling the end to the video. By having the band members as the last thing you see it shows once again their unity and that they are always going to be together in the end.

The Maccabees - Precious Time

I believe that this video would come under the label of Disjuncture. I say this as I feel that there's not really a lot of meaning behind the video, however they are demonstrating a lot of individuality with the hundreds of images used to create the video.

It is clear from a few Maccabees videos, including the 'No Kind Words' one Ed has analyzed by using a lot of animation and animations. This fits in with the genre of music the create, with it being Alternative/Indie.

There are however parts of the video that could perhaps have links to the lyrics, or even give us a deeper meaning into the lyrics behind the song.

This part shows how they use someone's fingers to represent toes to follow the lyrics 'toe to toe' and they also have someone twiddling with their thumbs as to go with the 'no-where to go, so I'm tip-toeing around it' part.

As the band were still generally a small band at the time, as is demonstrated by the play count of just 236,513 despite the track being now out for four years, they use the video as a slight advertisement for their at the time, latest album - Colour It in. They do this by drawing the faces that actually feature on the front cover of the album, however they paint them in different colours to the eventual ones that are used.

This part of the video shows a view looking out of a window. It is used cleverly to represent the time passing, with the animated clouds passing by, and also the sun rising and then setting once again, this refers to the lyrics 'let's take our precious time about it'. The clouds later are in the video, at around 1:50, with everything stood still, as if time has now frozen as it is so 'precious'.

This part of the video once again is able to refer to the lyrics, they choose to use a crossword to write out the words 'Lets Make Time' and then a word-search to highlight the words 'work for us' it is of course all edited in time to go exactly with the words and runs very smoothly.

At the end of the video the band are put back together by puzzle pieces, this shows the band's unity. It once again has the hand drawn people/faces as another attempt to promote the latest album, the people are placed around the band showing that the album is the work of all of the band members and not just one. Finally the view goes back to the window, where everything is now dark, and finally the lights are turned off, signaling the end of the video.

No Kind Words - The Maccabees, Video Analysis

The opening scene of this music video appears to be quite simple, the mid shot of the camera shows two people sitting at a table. However as the video continues an animation appears in the area between the two characters, this animation appears in the form of two lines, one red and one blue. The amnimation creates what is known as amplication, as the animation along with the title of the song 'No Kind Words' adds a deeper meaning the video as it becomes clear the two characters are in a confrontation with one another.

The animation creates a maze in which the red and blue collide causing an explotion as the conversation heats up. The animation then takes the form of classic game of ping in which red and blue dots are fired across the gap between the two characters which perhaps represents the insults being delivered to each other.  The song begins with the lyrics...' Dear friend of mine has, Broken his union' which backs up the suggestions made by the animation, that something has happened which has caused the argument between the two characters which is documented in the music video.

In this part of the video the animation is particularly enlightening, the animation shows what appears to be sound waves coming from each character. The characters facial expressions also become much more animated during this scene, suggesting the argument is heating up. The lyrics 'Alone, alone, alone' are repeated throughout the song showing that the characters have grown apart, which could be represented by the wide space between the two characters.

Towards the end of video there is clearly a victor in the arguement, this can be seen through the animation and the body language of the characters. The blue animation backs down and offers on apology which is quickly dismissed by the other character, who shoots down any hopes of reconciliation which is shown by the animation in the form of another retro game, Space Invaders.

After a failure to make amends with the other character the video ends with a close up of the character, the close up shot emphasisis the characters expression which appears to be extremely sad and disconcerted, this connotes that the character is extremely upset about events which suggests he had lost someone that was extremely close to him. However towards the end of the clip the animation has much less meaning and does not really represent anything to the audience, this is known as disjuncture.

Anthony Goodwin Music Video Theory

Anthony Goodwin suggested that there were 3 main formats behind music videos.

  1. Amplification. This is the idea that you use images to add extra, deeper meaning to the song and video.
  2. Illustration. This is literally just having your video show a literal translation of the lyrics.
  3. Disjuncture. This is where you use images and clips that don't really fit your lyrics, however they do sometimes have hidden meanings.

Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down

This is the opening part of the video. It immediately sets up the story to the song by introducing the girl that the lyrics are constantly referring to. It shows the girl meeting up with various men, it is quite clear that the girl is offering her 'services' for money with men pulling up in cars etc with the girl then walking over to them and then standing through the window perhaps talking about what exactly the girl is offering. Right at the end of the clip it shows another man talking to the girl, and he is introduced when the lyrics 'what a scummy man' are said in the background, instantly giving the audience the feeling that this man is even worse than the others previously shown and that maybe he is in someway different to the rest of those previously shown. It also then shows the man sat down with a girl eating in a cafe, with the man stealing some of the girls food at the exact point that the lyrics say 'i bet he'll rob you if he can', showing that he isn't phased by taking from this girl.

This next clip of the video shows the girl once again meeting up with men, talking and then the girl leading the men off, perhaps to a room of some kind. The man that as already been referred to as 'scummy' then re-enters the shot on a mid shot when the words 'he told Roxanne to put on her red-light' are heard. This perhaps is showing that he is infact almost the 'boss' of this girl, [Roxanne] and that maybe he is taking a cut of any money she is making. Furthermore the girl is also shown as being depressed and looking unhappy as she is stood on the corner of the road, waiting for another 'customer' as cars drive by her as she freezes.

This clip is has now moved to a part of the song where the beat and tempo has picked up considerably. The video helps to show this with a lot of on-beat editing. The whole pace of the video speeds up a considerable amount, with the mise-en-scene now being shots of the view from outside a rushing car, with brake lights of cars a big part. This could be referring to the 'red-light' idea of the girl and is a clever way of showing its hidden meaning. The clip also once again goes back to the 'scummy man' showing him walking out of a building offering a 'talent show & strippers' once again reiterating the thought that he could be the boss of the young girl who he seems to be so carelessly offering around to everyone. The clip then goes onto show the young girl attempting to make money in her own way, by quickly and discretely passing something to a young boy as she moves on, leading the viewer to assume that it is infact drugs that she has just given out, whilst taking in some money.

This clip sees the girl return to the location where we initially saw her meet up with the scummy man, she is clearly freezing but insists on waiting for him, perhaps because she's scared what will happen if she doesn't. The man does eventually turn up and offers the girl extra clothes for warmth. We then see a man performing magic tricks in the picture, with various mid shots & close ups of his tricks, the scene then once again offers on-beat editing with pictures of a white rabbit and a card, all be it the 'joker' this perhaps making suggestions that this is all just a laugh to the man, but the lifeless white rabbit is infact the lady who is powerless in this situation and is just being used quite literally.

The next part of the video shows close ups of the man and lady in a taxi, with him licking her face, this showing his power over her and she just accepts it and lets it happen. The clips are now very short and are coming thick and fast, this representing the now fast pace of the song. The girl seems to be fighting back, throwing things and being violent. The viewer is now lead to believe that the girl now has some kind of power back, however this is once again returned back to usual when we see the man marching the girl back literally by her hair and throwing her back into the room.

The final part of the video once again shows the girl being violent, and showing her lack of power on the situation, as it really doesn't seem to be getting her anywhere as she once again gets told off by the man. The video ends with the girl looking very depressed and looking at the floor as if nothing is good at all and she hasn't really anything to live for.
