Filming Locations

After producing an overall idea for our music video, we have been told that we need to into more detail about the locations we are planning on filming in. Our chosen song Shuffle - Bombay Bicycle Club has in my opinion a brilliant video, in which the band are just filmed behind the scenes to give the audience an idea of what their life is like.

For our idea we were planning on creating something similar to this, our idea was to film our band members on a day out with cut back to the band performing in a studio. We were going to film the band on a day out in Birmingham, we have chosen Birmingham because it is one the biggest cities in England and boasts multiple attractions such as the Bullring, The Mailbox and Skate Parks (we do have a particular one in mind, however I do not know the name of it). We are also planning to do some filming in the nightlife of Birmingham and Leicester, we decided to include this in our video as we both believe that nightlife and and partying is a massive part of band life, so to give the audience a realistic insight into the bands life this must be included.

As for the location we are going to use for filming the band performing, we are undecided, this is due to us struggling to find a location big enough to use and a location were nobody would be disturbed.

We plan to start our filming at the train station as we have some good idea's in which this would be the perfect location to make these ideas a reality. After filming the train station and the journey (we will film both the journey there and the journey back), we will head towards the Bullring shopping centre, this is our second filming location and we plan to use the statue of the bull outside the shopping centre as well as using the escalators inside the shopping centre as we will believe this will look effective. We may film inside some of the shops in the shopping centre but exactley which shops is still in discussion.

Our next filming location will be the skatepark, we decided to film here as skating is a big part of the representation of the indie/alternative genre. Another reason for filming here is that some of the members of the band are enthusiastic skaters and to film them skating would add another aspect to the music video.

We also plan to film inside some of the nightlife in Leicester and in Birmingham as night life and nightime activities all come as part of being in a band. We plan to film some footage for the music Video in Mosh Night Club in Leicester, as we believe this willl again look good in a music video and will be particularly coherent with our choice of song.

Mr Smith here, just having a snoop on your blog to see what you're up to. You've picked an incredibly difficult style of video that will need unbelievable amounts of storyboarding. The best example I can give you is Kings Of Leon Use Somebody

All the documentary footage (them playing concerts, on buses, in bars etc) is FAKE. They originally gave the members cameras and told them to film the tour, when they got the footage back it didn't look like a tour so they had to plan and shoot EVERYTHING, bar about 4 scenes of a massive concert.

If you want to film in MOSH you need permission, simply using a camera phone wont be good enough light wise.

In terms of genuine Live documentary footage videos the The Cribs Our Bovine Public is the best example (the song is a 3 minute slagging off of the Pigeon Detectives)

be warned though as it uses around 6 different venues (The Charlotte in Leicester is one) and hundreds of cuts, often switching venues mid lyric.

You boys will need to be near faultless in your planning otherwise you'll end up with hours of useless footage.

  2. Wise words from Mr Smith. Your idea is an interesting one but you will need to follow the advice he has left you if you want to film in the venues you have indicated.

The planning and the storyboard for this type of video will also need to be more comprehensive (bear in mind the hundreds of cuts in the Pigeon Detective's video), otherwise it will just seem really chaotic and make no sense at all.
