The Vaccines - If You Wanna

This video by The Vaccines is one of, if not the most simplistic video yet to come from the band. I have chosen to do an analysis of it as I believe that despite it being so simply done, it still looks good and looks like a professional video.

In this opening scene the lighting is crucial. As the song gets louder, and the guitars are strum, the lighting changes colour and also brightens up in time with the song - on-beat editing. The lighting is also done in correspondence to the word 'morning' as the light changes to a yellowy, orange colour, representing the sun rising.

The thing I like about this video, and this clip in particular is the way that the band are just doing what they do best, playing their music. It has close ups on the lead singer, singing the lyrics into the microphone, another close up on the guitarist playing a riff that can be strongly heard in the song and finally a close up of the drummer. All of this is in perfect time and it looks as if the band are actually performing the song live for the video. The main focus in the clip and in the video as a whole is the lead singer, as it often is, as it highlights the fact that he is infact the frontman of the band, however by having midshots and close ups of every band member gives emphasis on the fact that it isn't just about Justin Young, the frontman, and that infact they're a band and each member is crucial.

The lighting is used here to show the emotions of the lyrics. With the lyrics being 'alone, I am all alone' blue lighting is used, showing the viewer that he is upset about this, and on the final time of repeating the lyrics 'I am all alone' the blue gets darker and darker until it goes totally black and you can just see the band members in shadows which looks very effective. When the song then moves back onto 'If you wanna come back it's alright' the lighting then moves back into a bright orange, and the band members seem to now be playing the song with more anger behind them and it's clear to see from Justin's facial expression that he is now moved on from his bland facial expression used to show his sadness in the 'all alone' part of the song.

In this final part of the video there is a lot of movement from the band, with them jumping around a lot, this representative of the speed of the song. There is a lot of midshots and close ups on the different members all playing their different instruments. The lighting changes a lot in the final part of the video, this once again showing the speed of the final part of the song.

To end the video they simply have the screen getting dark from top working down to the bottom, but just before it all goes black you can make out the silhouettes of the band members just before it goes totally off, signaling the end to the video. By having the band members as the last thing you see it shows once again their unity and that they are always going to be together in the end.
