Representations In Our Music Video

In this post we are identifying the main representations that come across in our music video. To do this we have broken down the representations into simple categories, this will help people get a better understanding of what our music video represents.

Who:
For the purposes of our music video we are a fairly standard band structure, with 4 memebers (lead singer, keyboard player, drummer and a guitarists). Our music video will cut from the bands everyday life to them performing. The band willl be wearing indie/alternative style clothing for example skinny jeans. The clothing and general appearance of all band memebers will represent the Indie/alternative genre. The music video will also represent a certain social class, this class will be white middle class. The class will be represented by the band members as they are themselves whtie middle class. The band members featured in our video are all male, this means that the music video will strongly represent the male gender but will also attract the female as the band member will be extrtemely stylish and are also famous. If we had to compare our band members to another band it would be the Foals, this is because they are stylish and unique, they have also become very popular which is what we hope will happen to our band. We have also decided on our band members recently, we have chosen people that we are acquainted with as this will make things more relaxed and will also look like a more convincing band in the music video. We have selected people that represent the Indie/Alternative genre through both their appearance and taste in music. Our band members are as following:

What:
Our video is based around the idea of disjuncture and is basically designed to show what it is really like to be in a band, we aim to do this by filming the band is there free time. This insight into the bands life will hopefully represent the indie/alternative genre in a better way than most other music video as it will give a greater insight into the band and what they are really like behind the scenes. The video will also cut back to the band performance of the song, meaning that the video will display both sides of the bands life, from performing to leisure time.

Where:
As our video is based disjuncture and filming the band during their free time we are using a large number of different locations in our video. To get a better understanding of the idea behind our video I would advise you to watch the official video for Bombay Bicycle Club - Shuffle.

We have adapted the concept of this video and added our own ideas as to what our band will be filmed doing during the video. The majority of our music video will be filmed in Birmingham city centre, we chose this location as Birmingham is a huge city and has many interesting features that will be included in our film, for example The Bullring. We will also be filming in many other places such as the train station, New Street, the skate park, the train and band members houses. Despite a large number of different places and disjuncture in the music video we plan to keep cutting back to the band performing the song, this will add some consistency to the video and the band performance will all take place in one location which is likely to be the school drama room. We have chosen this location as it allows us access to equipment and technology that we would not have otherwise, for example the spotlights, this equipment should add an air of professionalism to our video and will hopefully help it to standout from others.

Why:
Before deciding on a final idea for our music video me and Tom both spent lots of time researching and watching other music videos. When we came across Bombay Bicycle Club's new song Shuffle not only did we both really like the song but also the music video that accompanied it. After watching this music video we decided to produce something similar, sticking to the same idea of using disjunctive video footage of the band and producing a quite random and lighthearted music video. We also chose this idea particularly for this song as we both felt that a disjunctive video really suits this type of song. Despite the large amounts of planning involved in this kind of music video and some wise words of wisdom from some teachers we decided to stick to our original idea, as we both feel that we can make a video that will match the standard of our work so far.

How:
After deciding on our band members we are now ready to begin the filming process for our music video. As our video is filmed in a location that is quite far from where we are based it is crucial that we film all our footage in one session. To make sure this happens we have selected a date for our filming trip and have double checked with all band members that they are available for this date to reduce any chance of problems. We are also going to produce a schedule list in the near future as this will again make sure that we stick to our plan and reduce the risks involved in a project such as this. We have also began looking into what camera equipment we will use, this will most likely be a mixture of school and personal equipment as this is essential before any filming can take place.
