Plan: Evaluation Question 1

After looking at other students work and what worked and what didn't, as a team we have decided to present our question one in the format of a video. We came to this decision after analyizing other students work presented to us by our teacher. By producing a video we will have many other options on how to produce the other 3 questions. Here are some examples we looked at:

This video is particularly impressive as the content answers the question brilliantly, the producer explains what conventions the video follows and where they took inspiration for their ideas from. We are hoping to produce something similar to this if not better.

Things our question must include
- Inspiration behind our ideas
- What conventions our video follows and challeneges
- specific vocabulary e.g. equilibrium
- Describe Mise en Scene
- Camera work
- Target audience and how its met

Evaluation Examples

Now that it's time to start looking at Evaluations we have had a look at a wide range of last years examples and have learnt what worked for people and also what went wrong and stopped them achieving what the group/individual should of.

For question 1: 'In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?' we looked at lots of examples from other classes and we believed that this is the best example for question 1 and the one that we are hoping to emulate the most.

We have spoken already about this questions and we beleive that we could use the same idea of linking our video back to clips of videos we have taken ideas from, for example Bombay's own video for shuffle.

For Question 2 'How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?'
this seems a more visual answer. We have agreed to do an A3 presentation, probably on wix.com as we like the look of other peices of work people have produced on this website.
Here is one we found, however we can't embed it due to its size.

http://www.wix.com/alexfarnell/evaluation-2

Question 3 is 'What have you learned from your audience feedback?'
Obviously at the minute we haven't completed our video so it is impossible for us to have any idea on what our audience may think of the video. We received good feedback for our draft however this was missing a lot of shots so the video will be slightly different to our draft.

Question 4 'How did you use media technologies in the construction & research, planning and evaluation stages?'

This question is fairly self explanatory in terms of what the answer should be. We like this example :

We believe that it demonstrates good use of technology within the technology question which is always a positive, furthermore he has gone into detail explaining everything he used throughout his media coursework. If me and Ed could create something similar this would be good and it's definitely something we will be trying to do.

Plan: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary task?

I think that the combination of our music video and my ancillary task work really well together, both products use the same indie conventions and it is clear that they are both influenced by the same genre of music. Both the music video and the digipack feature the band members in indie style clothing and the general style of the band for example their hair style and mannerisms such as speech.

My digipack features a consistent theme of playing cards. The front panel consists of 8 pictures and two text boxes. There are 4 pictures of playing cards, I took photographs of the picture cards and edited them so that the pictures had been replaced with photographs of each band member. I then simply added the title-* of the the band and album using downloaded text off the internet. For the back panel, I used pictures of the back of playing cards and layered the song names and numbers over the top. The overall idea of the front and back panels was that they would look like an actuall fan or cards with the front and the back of the cards positioned is the same posistions.

The other 4 panels all use the same motif and all feature playing cards in some way shape or form. +

Although my digipack does not use any images from the music video the inspiaration behind the idea came from the song title itself, 'Shuffle'. This song name and its reference to playing cards gave me the idea to use them as the main theme of my digipack. To integrate my digipack ideas and music video further, I decided to name the album 'Solitare' reinforcing the playing card motif. The connections between my song/album name and the inspiration behind my digipack shows continuity and allows the audience can relate to the style of LA Unkown.

After looking at both my video and my digipack I believe that the quite spontaneous and random theme is continuous across both pieces of work.

Second Mock

Today we uploaded our second mock of the music video.

This is not going to be are exact final piece, we may still be adding or removing some shots depending on our feedback.

Evaluation Question One Plan:

Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
What is the question asking?
This question requires you to demonstrate how your research and planning has influenced your work. You'll need to review your research and planning posts and identify which elements from the music videos and artists you've researched have been incorporated into your final pieces.
You need to be honest, does your product 'work'?
When responding DON'T:
  • write an essay
  • simply list points
  • produce a PowerPoint
  • waffle!
  • claim to have been 'original' (you haven't been, it's not possible!)
  • ONLY discuss your video

When responding DO:
  • Write about all THREE products
  • Be creative (how can you respond in an entertaining yet informative way?)
  • Use technology (e.g. photoshop, tubechop, prezi, scribd, iMovie, soundcloud, flickr etc)
  • Be analytical (pick out specific examples and remember your A2 theorists as well as ones from AS. Barthes, Todorov, Mulvey, Gilmore, Goodwin, Stewart etc)
  • Explain every decisions (discuss the choices you made)
  • Use the correct vocabulary (longshot, verisimilitude, diegetic ect)
To help plan this part of our evaluation we have been looking at other students work to help give us inspiration for ways to make our response creative yet informative. Here are some examples of other students work and some of my thoughts about them:

This example of question 1 of the evalutation is by Jack Fox. I really like this example as it is visually pleasing as well as being very informative and using lots of different examples. Jack links his bands music video to the conventions used in many other videos from artists from a similar genre. Jack makes reference to bands such as Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons, The Smiths and Bombay Bicycle Club. The only thing about this question which I would change is the way in which Jack has used Prezi. Although Prezi is a good alternative to the more common programs such as Powerpoint and Word it has become quite common and I belive using a more creative program would have improved the visual aspect of the evaluation.

Here is another example of question 1:
'Evaluation Question 1
This Evaluation has been constructed to simulate a debate over blogs between an avid reviewer and a production team. The context is that the 'new' band Acoustic Plenty boasted wild claims about their debut album, a reviewer called Jonathon Greensby from Q magazine writes about his fury of their claims and demands the production group for the video prove against Acoustic Plenty's claims. The production group's response has been constructed to answer the Evaluation Question.

The reviewer's blog post on Acoustic Plenty's claims:
http://theangryreview.blogspot.com/

The production team resposible for creating Acoustic Plenty's video 'Temporary Press' and their blog reply:
http://temporarypressblog.blogspot.com/
This example is by Tim Andrews. Although the content of this question is of very high quality I am not convinced by the way Tim has decided to present his ideas. The post looks small and plain on his blog and makes the post look uninteresting. The links are much more interesting and use lots of clips and text together, and the idea of using two different perspectives is very effective, my only issue is with the presentation.

Evaluation

Now that the deadline for the final video is fast approaching and our work is almost ready for submitting it is time to begin to look at the evaluation process. Here are the evaluation questions we will be following:

Evaluation Questions
  1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
  3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
  4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
We will be looking to complete these questions using different technology and displaying many different skills. The evaluation process is extremely important as it is essential to explain the ideas behind your video otherwise the meaning may be missed. A good evaluation will give the viewer a deeper understanding of your ideas and also show the amount of work that has gone into producing a music video.

Digi-Pack

I've finally now finished my Digi-Pack and here are some images.

I'm happy with my final pieces and believe that the continuity of the ripped and collage effect I have used throughout works really well. I decided to have the 3 page spread on my digi-pack actually black and white after taking on board some criticism off my teacher about how the greens of the trees wouldn't fit appropriately with the rest of my colour scheme. I did however feel that I wanted to keep the bright colour and the idea of the various objects for the 3 page spread so added in the picture of the black cat featured on my front cover and I also then went on to use some Photoshop texture effects to add in various colourful flowers and greenery at the back of the spread to give it that continuity throughout.

Despite my front cover being so time consuming and the fact that it took me hours upon hours to put it all together and cut out I'm really happy with it. I believe that it totally suits the music genre I'm trying to target - Alternative and like the Klaxons' debut album cover is a bit unusual and 'out there' which would only help an upcoming artist gain attention.

The back cover to my album is very simple. I chose to do this when I started doing some research into various other back covers. The one that I found looked the best was Mark Ronson's debut album 'Version' where everything was kept extremely simple with black and white only for colours, clear fonts and just keeping everything very minimalistic, therefore I opted for exactly this as it would also complement my over complicated front cover as it would mean that I wasn't going too overboard throughout my Digi-Pack.

Finally, the third panel on the outside of my digi-pack is definitely one of my favourite panels. It includes everything I wanted a panel to include, we have the correct dress sense for my genre, the seriousness, the humour in Jamie's face, the torn effect used in both newspaper and a word search which carrys on the collage effect well. I also believe that the colours of the newspaper and the word search work really well and when on top of the black background look professional.

Location

Due to not being able to get everyone together has meant that we will now be using our original idea of using the drama studio with the black backdrop.

It is now likely that we will be using one of our friends houses as he has numerous empty rooms, or even shooting in his garden, weather depending. The weather forcast shows that the weather will be overcast and possibly not great visibility, especially in the early morning.

Shots to do:

Saturday:
Keyboard shots
walking shots
dancing shots
H&M shots

Monday
Band shots

Evaluation

Last week we set out in Birmingham with a camera, batteries, food and a few skateboards alongside a few of our friends.

We had finally managed to get everyone together, all be it including one band member actually being rather an unplanned final addition to our four man group. However this certain individual ticked all the boxes for us in terms of his looks his acting credentials and he also is a sponsored skateboarder so he had a few tricks or two for our camera.

We successfully managed to get all shots filmed that we wanted to in Birmingham city centre, however there were several hurdles/issues we had to overcome in order for this to happen.

First of all the keyboard we had managed to get our hands on was extremely big and heavy and with our trip lasting 9 hours this meant that between me and Ed we had to split the time in which we carried this massive instrument around the ever busy city centre of Birmingham whilst dealing with several comments from members of the public and certain Russian men asking whether or not we were selling the Keyboard. We managed to carry it all the way back to the car at the other end of the train station with me and Ed exhausted from hauling it around with us all day.

Another issue we faced was the fact that the city was so busy. Obviously we were well aware that it would still be fairly packed out despite it not being school holidays and a usual working day, however we didn't quite think it would be as busy as it was. This lead to a few problems in terms of us having to try and get some footage of skating within the city centre and also when we were trying to get our 'hide & seek' shots inside H & M clothing store. We had also storyboarded the idea that the band would actually mount the bull outside the bullring, however there was building work taking place on the lighting around the bull so this wasn't possible.

We need to to re film several shots purely because we need the quality higher and also we could do with a few shots being re filmed because despite us going for the handheld look we believe it would look a lot better if the camera was still and in a fixed position.
When we put together our animatic we were well aware we may need some extra shots in order to speed up our video and keep the viewers interested, therefore we went about this by adding in some action shots of skateboarding and certain signs that we felt were appropriate to use in our music video.

We recieved our feedback from our teacher and despite half of our video being missing we still scored a reasonable 17/40, this being bottom level 2. It seems that the teacher's beliefs were very much the same as ours. They had also commented on the fact that we should only take certain shots handheld and that the others should be filmed with a tripod. We were also told to consider using various distances in our shots and perhaps to use this to develop our characters and gain a basic understanding with them.

Schedule

we've completed editing our mock however we've not been able to get everyone together for the second time in order to film the part of the video when we cut back to a live performance.

In order to overcome this issue we placed  simple black parts into the video so that we knew the exact timing for all over the other clips.

We then decided that because we haven't actually filmed these shots it would be a good idea to plan exactly what the shots would be where they are black in our mock.

We went through the song and selected which shots would fit the song most appropriately and wrote a deatailed shot list and a lyric sheet. Here are the documents;

After receiving feedback on my mock I also decided to produce a shot list on my phone for the other side to the video. Here it is;

Equipment

As we plan to be filming this week and next I have decided to produce a list of the equipment we need to have with us in order to make sure that we are fully prepared and have everything we need. We plan to have two filming sessions between now and the deadline, both of which will require us to have very different equipment as we will be filming very different things.

Filming session 1:
In this filming session we will be re-filming parts of the draft video which were fairly low quality, for example the dancing shots. For this we will need a variety of equipment. We will need: Camera, tripod, skateboard, band members and a keyboard and stand. As we have already filmed this scenes once, re filming them should be a farily simple task as we now know where/how we went wrong.

Filming session 2:
In this session we will be filming the band performance, this filming session should be more difficult as we have not done this before and will need to make sure that everything is perfect. For this filming session we will need much more equipment. We will need: camera, tripod, band members, keyboard and stand, 2 guitars, drum set, microphrone and amps. This filming session could prove very difficult as it will be hard to transport and arrange that amount of equipment. However to make things easier we have written down exactley what to film and how long we need to make each shot.

Final Digipack

Here is my final digipack and magazine advert, as you can see the theme is consistent throughout both peices of work. I believe this is one of the stongest points of my digipack. Overall I found producing my digipack very challenging and also at times very frustrating. However over the course of producing this work my photoshop skills have improved considerably and I know feel much more comfortable using the software although I still find the software very annoying at times. One of the most difficult things I found was making arrangement with the band members, as both me and them have very busy schedules and it is difficult to find a time that we are both free. Other than I quite enjoyed producing my digipack and magazine advert and I am very happy with the final result.

Digi Pack

My digi pack is finally getting there and i'm very close to having it complete. I had some issues last night as I tried to do something on my 3rd panel with the stars and day light from my front cover. I attempted to use strips of colour on my page however decided to go against the idea and simply use smaller strips of newspaper and wordsearch.

Update

i've been making my collage front cover again today on photoshop. I today have been using some things I made out of card drawing various flower templates and also literally tearing newspaper so that I can get that perfectly teared effect I'm looking for.

The collage effect is proving very very time consuming and I've therefore not been able to even think about any of the other panels on my digi-pack.

Photo's

Here is a preview of some of the photographs taken for my final digipack. The photographs have been taken with a high quality camera and after tweaking the lighting and colours on photoshop they look very effective on my digipack. Obviously here there are only photographs of two of the band members, however I plan to take the rest of the photographs in the very near future. As previously stated in the evaluation of the draft music video having a larger sized band it can be difficult to get everyone together at the same time. Fortunately for me the photos I need for my digipack allow me to take the photographs individually making the organisation behind the photographs slightly easier.

Evalualtion - Draft Video

I personally feel that the most difficult element of producing our draft video was the planning of the video. As our video planned to go to Birmingham we found it difficult to get all the band members free at the same time, as filming our music video would take a full day. As the deadline drew nearer our decision was very last minute and the planning concerning the camera and other equipment or lack of it for example a tripod. Despite the lack of planning the actuall filming went really well. At the end of the days filming we had gathered together some really good footage and had stuck to our storyboard really well.

From the filming of our draft video we have learnt that it is essential to plan everything throughoughly, this will hopefully pay of with filming of our final video, as the we will have a tripod and a better quality camera which will make the video look much more professional. We will also plan filming sessions much more in advance, this will give each band member more time to arrange timings and ensure that they are available. This essential as each bandmember is doing me and Tom a big favour and we have to remember that there is nothing in this for them, for their help we are very greatful!

Front Cover

I've been working on my front cover again tonight, taking several pictures and working on the collage. It's proving a hard task and very time consuming at the minute with trying to make everything fit nicely. I'm still however hoping that I will be able to produce the final piece as tonight I also completed the back cover giving the new album track names. I've kept to the idea explained in a previous post of having just 10 tracks on the album and I've also decided to keep all track names in lower case and give no numbering as I believe it works better.

eyelids
golden sun
young love
lotus flower
secret door
two steps, twice
shuffle
jigsaw
good evening
infinity

Despite these seeming somewhat slightly random there has been a lot of thought put into them. First of all with the track named eyelids this is done because I wanted to feature various pictures on the front cover of eyes and I thought it would be fitting to include a song with a eye reference. Furthermore, I opened the album on this track as when you wake up you open your eyes hence it being track 1. In terms if golden sun, this is another track that relates to the morning hence the start of the album and I like the way the sun is described as golden. Young Love is a track that was released by the Mystery Jets. I really like the song and believe it fits well with my genre, I once again decided to feature it towards the first half of the album due to the obvious use of Young in the track name implying it's early on.

Lotus flower was a track I knew was going on my album from day one, due to the fact I had plans for various shots of flowers for my front cover in my mind. It's a song from Radiohead who are a band that I listen to a lot and wanted to get some kind of reference of them into my band. Secret Door is a track that comes from Arctic Monkeys. I picked it really because of the use of the word Secret and the way that everything seems a bit elusive, which is definitely the feel I wanted to get across for LA Unknown. Two Steps, Twice comes from a band called Foals. I'm not too sure why I wanted it in there, but I really like the title of the song so decided to get it in there. Track number 7 sees the single from the album 'Shuffle' appear. I chose to put this in at number 7 purely for the reason that it's so many people's lucky/favourite number and with it being the debut single it's likely to be someone's favourite track on the album at first. After that we have Jigsaw, once again another song from Radiohead, however this time I chose to use it because of the fact that my front cover is something of a Jigsaw and I believed it represented the whole idea really well. Good Evening is my track 9, this was chosen as it's coming to the end of the album. As the night draws to an end you would say good evening, so to give the idea that the album is coming to an end I thought it would be a good song name to use towards the end. It is also a song title that is used by Bombay Bicycle Club.  My last track name 'infinity' comes from The XX. I really like the idea that there is no end and it never stops so wanted to give this same impression for the album; just because it has ended doesn't mean that the meaning has stopped applying to everything. It also links in with the never ending spiral that I plan to have on my front cover.
